WOMEN'S INSTITUTE MEETS

At the monthly meeting of the Brookside Women's Institute, Mrs F. S. Candy presided over a good attendance of members.

A report of the recent Federation meeting held at Christchurch was read by Mrs Saunders.

Madame Just, of Christchurch, who acted as judge for the competitions, was the speaker for the afternoon, and she gave a most interesting address on Switzerland and showed some wonderful examples of Swiss needlework. A hearty vote of thanks 'was extended to Madame Just, and to Mrs Rennie, who accompanied j her.

Two new members were elected, which makes the total 35.

The roll call, "What I like doing on a wet day," caused considerable

amusement.

The competition, "best article from waste material," was won by Mrs Bowden, with Mrs Taylor second and Mrs Saunders third. The competition, "best bloom in my garden," resulted in Mrs Croy being placed first, Mrs J. Hight second and Mrs T. W. Brooks third.

A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdarjes Chamberlain, Graham and Hastings.

The social half-hour was in the hands of Mrs Croy and Mrs S. Boag, who * entertained with a piano solo and a competition.
