DUNSANDEL

LAST NIGHT'S HOCKEY BALL.

VERY LARGE ATTENDANCE

Proof of what enthusiastic organising work, combined with a judicious measure of publicity, can accomplish, adverse weather conditions, notwithstanding, was afforded at the Dunsandel Town Hall last night on the occasion of the Ladies' Hockey Club's annual ball. The attendance was such as to fully tax the hall accommodation, while there has not been held in the hall for some time a gathering so thoroughly representative of a very large area. The officials and members of the club generally, and not least the honorary secretary, Miss Grace Walker, were obviously greatly pleased at the hearty response made by members of other clubs and the public generally, to its widely, broadcast invitation. In every respect the ball was a huge success and the hockey girls have set a very high standard for other dance committees to attain. Everyone present entered whole-heartedly into the evening's enjoyment and the arrangements made by the committee were so thorough that not the smalls est. detail likely to* affect the evening's enjoyment was overlooked. The club deserves to be warmly congratulated upon the success of its 1935 ball.

A departure was made from the usual streamer decorations in favour r of flowers and greenery, and with \ very pleasing results. The stage, in . particular, was decorated with many beautiful chrysanthemum blooms, in addition to other autumn flowers^arid

foliage, tastefully relieved with touches of evergreen, while artistically arranged bunches of greenery were placed on the walls and over the centre of the dancing floor. In the supper room, too, the tables looked, very pretty with their vases .of chrysanthemums and other flowers many of the chrysanthemum blooms being of very fine quality. In such an artistic setting as the stage presented the Erica Orchestra might

well have been expected to do its

very best, and it must be admitted •that the dancers had no cause to complain regarding the music. The floor, too, was in capital order. The dancing was under the experienced and capable supervision of Mr W. V. Chatterton, as master of ceremonies, assisted by Mr Ken Johnston. A popular programme included a Monte Carlo waltz, the lucky couple being Miss Roma Green and Mr Gordon Chatterton. During a short interval, Mr Alan Shrimpton, the possessor of a well-developed and powerful baritone voice, sang in admirable style the solo, "Tell Me To-night." He had to respond to an insistent encore. During the early part of the evening a number of the guests took a hand at euchre in the anteroom, Mrs R. J. Caldwell and Mr E. A. Washbourne being the most successful players. Members and supporters of the' club assisted with the serving of a very dainty supper, which included fruit salad. For the success of. the function a large measure of credit is due to the following committee:—Misses J. and A. Forster, L. McGregor, B. Chamberlain, M. Skinner and G. Walker.
