SCHOOL SPORTS

ELLESMERE PUPILS COMPETE.

FIELD DAY AT LEESTON,

Colourful and animated scenes were presented at the Recreation Ground at Leeston today where children from schools on this side of the Selwyn river had gathered for the annual summer sports meeting. In the bright sunshine the varied coloured dresses of the girls and the white shirts of the boys presented a pleasing scene as the children competed in friendly rivalry on the oval.

The meeting was organised by the Ellesmere Schcol Sports Association, a programme of 50 events having been prepared, providing opportunities for children of a_l ages to demonstrate their prowess. As there were two heats and a final for the large majority of events, efficient organisation and prompt despatch were absolutely essential to enable the noting to be concluded in anything like reasonable time. The organising work had been carefully planned and as ! carefully carried out and everything went with a swing all day. All the officials, who included school committeemen as well as teachers, had their appointed duties. The competing children were marshalled in readiness for their events, the beys on one side of the oval and the girls on the other, and as quickly as one race was completed another set of competitors was ready at the starting post for the next. There were in all 961 entries, the undermentioned schools being represented: Brookside, Dunsandel, Irwell, Killinchy, Lakeside, Leeston, Leeston Convent, Sedgemere and Southbridge. As well as iridivi-l dual events there were several which called for team competition, while there was keen rivalry between the different schools for the distinction of gaining most points. The usual arrangements were made for luncheon, and it seems hardly necessary to add that altogether the children had a very pleasant outing.

Great credit is due to the members of the committee, under the direction of Mr W. H. Cartwright, who organised the meeting, and to all officials who took part in the work of running it for the excellent manner in which the various details were attended to and carried out. Tfiere was a fair attendance of the public during the morning and a much larger number in the afternoon.
