ELLESMERE GUN CLUB

A BENEFIT SHOOT,

NOVICES SHAPE WELL

To assist the funds for the Sedge-mere-Lakeside Miniature Rifle Clvb — Sedgeinere Hall bazaar, to be held on

April 28, the Ellcsmerc Gun Club held a shoot on its grounds at Lakeside last Saturday, which was not confined to members of the Gun Club. The afternoon was both successful and enjoyable, the net proceeds amounting to £6 16s. Owing to the Christchurch Gun Club \s clay bird championship being held the same afternoon, and to the fact that there is still a fair amount of pea and clover harvesting going on, the attendance was scarcely as large as was expected. Several novices who took part shaped very well indeed, among the number being W. Collins, H. B. MeLaughlin and E. L. Cant, the first-named putting on 8 out of 12 in one match. Clay birds were used.

Proceedings opened with a six-bird sweep, J. Winchester, W. Winchester, Les Hantz and F. L. Graham, with all on, dividing the money.

No., 2 shoot was for a rose bowl given by Messrs Ashby Bergh and Co., the second prize being a case of afternoon tea spoons donated by Messrs Hammond and Turner, Ltd. F. L. Graham, with 11 breaks out of 12, won the first prize. E, J Nairn, F. Bowell, D. H. Ke.id and W. Winchester, each with 10 on, shot off for second prize, W. Win-

Chester Avinning.

Another six bird sweep was won by F. L. Graham, who scored the possible, while A.-Thian, D. H. Reid, H. T. Stephens and G. Nairn, each with five on, divided second money.

Afternoon tea was provided by theladies associated with the bazaar, assisted by other ladies who were present. During the adjournment Mr J. T. Parkin, chairman of the Sedgemere Hall Committee, presented the first prize in the main shoot, complimenting the winner and thanking the Gun Club for its assistance. Mr G. Nairn handed the second prize to the winner.

Mr H. T. Stephens, the new handicapper, did his work well and gave the impression that he will fill the position with every credit this season, He is taking a very keen interest in the work and it remains for members to accept his placings in a sportsmanlike spirit, and everything will run quite smoothly. Handicapping is by no means a popular job, but members can do a good deal to make- the work pleasant and interesting.

Mr W. E. Donald performed the duties of referee with his accustomed ability.

OPENING DAY.

Next Saturday the Club will hold its opening day, when a series of sweeps will take place.

SPKINGSTON CLUB.

On Easter Monday the Springston Gun Club will hold its annual shoot for the M. F. Ryan Memorial shield.
