The Dunstan Times 'Fiat Justitia Ruat Coleum.' Monday, March 13th, 1933. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The annual general meeting of the Central Otago A. & P. Association is called for 1.30 p.m. on Friday, 31st March, at Ophir. Attention is drawn to the fact that, owing to the visit of the i Governor general, the clearing j sale at Clyde, originally fixed j for to-morrow (Tuesday) has | been postponed until Friday, 1 this week. j Omakau district folk can look 1 forward to a treat! on _ Friday night, when a concert is to be given in the local hall. The programme appears in this issue. Mr Colin Johnston, seed and bulb merchant, Water Street, Dunedin, offers lor sale the largest avilable collection of bulbs at heavily reduced prices. Owing to shortage of water, the local Power Board has been reluctantly compelled to restrict the service, and it is now off in the day time. This step, which is unfortunately necessary, will prove very inconvenient to the many users of power. Mr Bodkin M.P. advises that authority has been given for the work of raising the walls at Lake Onslow. This should be good news to the Teviot Power Board, as well as to irrigators in the Roxburgh-Millers Flat district. Miss Hilda Keddell’s pen of White Leghorn hens continue to hold pride of place on the N.Z. Utility Poultry Club’s twenty-eighth egg laying competition at Papanui. With only four weeks to go Miss Keddell’s pen of 6 birds is leading by 38 eggs, and has put up a remarkably fine record in laying 1,399 eggs in 4S weeks. Mystery is dovetailed with mystery in “The Silent Witness” the Fox picture which will be shown by Hull’s Talkies at Clyde on Wednesday and Omakau Thursday, In the cast are such favourites as Lionel Atwill, Greta Nissen, Bramwell Fletcher, Helen Mack, Mary Forbes, Wyndham Standing, Herbert Mundin, Billy Bevan and Lumsden Hare. The picture tells the story of a father who stands trial for a murder of which his son has secretly confessed. Good supporting programme including Gazette and Comedy will be shown. Rather an amusing remark was overheard at the Cromwell Aerodrome on Thursday last when a man, presumably a farmer, was heard to say: “Everybody’s going up and wool is going down.” The opportunity for eight persons to travel from Sydney to England, spend a fortnight there, and return to Sydney, all in six weeks, is being offered by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, when he makes his flight to England in August. The fee includes first-class fare from New Zealand to Sydney and return, but passengers will be required to pay their own board en route. It is reported that two applications have already been received. Some shopkeepers in Dunedin report that they have been the victims of an alleged ingenious confidence trick. A tin of tobacco is purchased, and shortly after the buyer returns and says that there is no tobacco in the tin- only some old nails or some such hardware. The shopkeeper knowing that he is innocent of any such subterfuge, has his suspicions. But another aspect of the case has been brought to our notice. A wellknown tobacconist sold a tin of tobacco to a customer whom he knew. The tin was in its usual wrapping and appeared quite normal, but on opening it up the purchaser discovered that it contained six metal washers, four nuts, a bolt with an American thread, some silver paper, and an American 5 cent piece. The total weight was correct and the tin came from America. The Omakau Branch of the W.D.F.U held their monthly meeting in the Hall on March 2nd Mrs Scoular presided over a fair attendance, and after fhq business of the evening was concluded a darning competition was hdd. Mrs J. Charles was voted the winner, On the 2Sth February the Branch held a Euchre Party in aid of the Piunket Society- This was a pleasant and surcessful function, the Society benefiting to the extent of £6 13s
