(From the Dunstan Times)

We loam that the lowest tenderers for the new road —Butchers Gully to Clyde bridge— having given up their contract and forfeited deposit, the Gov eminent made proposals to the next lowest tenderers Messrs McConnachie and Tohill, who, we understand, have undertaken the job, and who will commence work at once. This firm has just completed a small contract for the Gov eminent on the Clyde Alexandra roadthe making of a new culvert over a water race on the new 1 line of road.

On Friday last a large number of the friends of Mr J. A. McKay, latcaccoun tant of New South Wales Bank, met at the Shamroch Hotel, Ophir, Cor the purpose of presenting him with a testimonial and a gold albert chain and appendages, on the occasion of his leaving the district. Mr James Corrigall occupied the chair. Elliott and party, whose sluicing claim is situate about a quarter of a mile on the Cromwell side of Felton’s hotel had a washing up last week after having been running for nearly twelve months the total yield being only some 22 ounces. We arc informed the party expected at the very least 200 ounces and that they fully believe the claim to have been systematically robbed. Sir W. Grant, the contractor for rcpairing —or rather, suspending and repairing the Cromwell bridge is getting ahead with the work, the moorings on one side being com'pleted, while on the other side he has commenced tunnelling into the solid rock for the moorings. When finished it will be but a temporary affair after all and we cannot but think it would have been a great deal nmre economical to put up an entirely new structure. The Dunedin Jockey Club have issued programmes for their Spring and Annual meetings. For the former there are eleven events, with a total amount of stakes of L 495; for the latter there arc fifteen events for Ll 840.
