ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Hawea Riding— Repairs to washouts on the Cromwell to Queenstown road are now practically completed by the Flood damage gang. The big stone culvert above the Meg was on inspection found to be in a damaged condition and I have had this repaired in concrete. Gravelling is now being carried out in a number of places and several new culverts have been installed. The usual maintenance has been carried out.

Lindis Riding—On completion of repairs to the Meg road the flood damage gang will proceed to the Tarras Lindis Pass road to carry out repairs to that road I am in receipt of authority from the Minister of Public Works for a grant of £6OO £ for £ basis towards the cost of restoring flood damage in this County. The approaches to the Lindis Bridge have been surfaced and path gravelling has been carried out on the Ardgour road. Hyde's road is being surfaced by the roadman. The sum of £B7 lOS has been received from the P. W. D. such sum being the grant available for the Lin-dis-Tarras Contract just completed. The usual maintenance has been carried out.

Carrick Riding—Repairs have been carried out to the Upper Nevis Road' but frost has delayed the surfacing in this locality. The. surfaceman is at present engaged on the Lower Nevis Road. The usual maintenance has been carried out,

Dunstan Riding—An additional small gabion will be necessary to secure the embankment forming the approach to the Manuherikia bridge against further encroachment. The usual maintenance has been carried out.

Matakanui Riding—One of the light bridges on the Omakau 10 Matakanui road was broken through by a heavy motor lorry. These bridges areobviously not designed for heavy traffic, and I would recommend that steps be taken to prevent a recurrence of this increasing practice. .The road fronting Mr E. Wallington's property will have to be graded and gravelled this season, and I further recommend that the road fronting Mr J. Clare's be gravelled also. The usual maintenance has been carried out.

Manuherikia Riding—l have inspected the threatened encroachment by the Manuherikia River above Ophir in Block r, Tiger Hill District. Some 20 chains of protective work will be required and I estimate this work to cost the sum of £3O. Perhaps the adjoining properly owners may assist by caning wiliows etc. Authority has-been received to proceed with the repairs to the broken bridge at the Mill near Omakau, the P. W. D. providing a £ for £ grant for this work. The road in Block 2. Poolbum District, near McAdy Bros., will require attention this summer. The usu; 1 maintenance has been carried out. Earnscleugh Riding—The surfacemen have completed the sluicing of the grade on Dry Gully Hill and are now engaged removing boulders from the cut. The Power House road has been surfaced and gravelled. Repairs to the road fronting Iversen's will be gone on with at an early date. The surfacemen are now gravelling the Clyde Alexandra road fronting Anscombe's. The usual maintenance has been carried out, County Houses— 1 have completed designs for the County Houses and expect to place tenders for erection ol same before the next meeting of Council. The report was adopted' Cr Scoular said that a Cromwell motor lorry had broken two of the light bridges on the Omakau-Matak-anui road. He thought steps should be taken under the bye laws to recover. A motion to this effect was carried. Cr Spain gave notice to move thai no more gravel reserves on roadlines be used. Cr Middleton gave notice to moveThat all hired vehicles be licensed. The Council then rose. ———MP—■»
