VINCENT COUNTY COUNCIL

The ordina:y monthly meeting of the above Council held at Clyde on Wednesday last, was attended by Crs D. Middleton (Chair), A. Scoular, J. McKnight, C. Weaver and J. Kane. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Crs J. Ritchie and G. S. PattersonA motion was carried confirming the motion striking a rate of six farmings in the £■ The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read and dealt with as under: —

The Minister of P. W. I), wrote re flood damages agreeing to pay £6OO £ tor £. This was in connection with recent floods in Lindis Valley and Kawarau Gorge. Mr Jas. Horn M. P. wrote on the same subject. The Minister further wrote in reply to a letter f.om the Council regretting that he couid not increase the amount ofsubsidv. The New Zealand Insurance Co. wrote acknowledging > return of statement under worker's compensa-

tion. The Secretary of the Counties Association wrote forwarding a report of considerations of last Conference, at which Cr Spain represented Vincent County Council. The Chairman expressed the Council's appreciation of Cr Spain's services. Mr E. Clouston, OmaUau, asked permission to cross the road with a pipe.—Granted, subject to work being done to the approval of the Engineer. Mr C. Noone, Poolburn, drew attention to the.bad state ot ithe road near his property, owing to irrigation water and neglect, Rabbit burrows in a reserve added to the trouble. Cr McKnight thought that some money should certainly be spent in gravelling the road complained of. In reference to the rabbits on the reserve he thought ihe roadman might attend to this. L, R. Williams, Galloway, wrote re road to cross the railway in place of road closed. The Engineer had attended to this. The Town Clerk, Alexandra, asked permission to replace a seven inch pipe with a nine inch one.—The Engineer

to report on same. Mr Robt. Rutherford, wrote asking that trustees be appointed to control the neglected Ida Valley Cemetery. Cr McKnight in support pointed out that the Cemetery was in bad order and required to be fenced. He suggested that the Council vote £ for £ up to £lO. The trustees suggested were Messrs W. R- Nevill.G. Mcintosh, Jas. Stuart, R. Webster and VV. Marshall senr.—Cr McKnights' motion was carried, Mr Cook, Moutere, wrote re road. The Engineer's report was not yet available. Cr G. S. Patterson, wrote intimating that as he was no longer paying rates he tendered his resignation as member for Clutha Riding.—Consideration was held over until next meeting. The Clerk of the Cromwell Borough wrote complaining about the state of the road from the railhead to Cromwell.— The Chairman remarked that the Govt, had been asked for a grant but there were worse, roads in Cromwell. The inward correspondence as read was received and the outward approved. The Chairman reported that during the month he had called a meeting at Tarras, but there was not a single ratepayer who advocated spending money on a bridge at Queensbury, He also reported that the Inspector of Roads recently appointed was doing good work. He had heard complaints of work done by roadmen in southern ridings, but with the Inspector it meant better supervision. The Couneil then went into Committee, the report on resuming being— Resolved—That the schedule of accounts amounting to L.2,751 be passed for payment. This included L 2,000 for the Bannockburn Water Race Area. The County Treasurer's statement was read and received. This showed the[antecedent liability to be 1-5,363. The dog registrar reported that he had registered 964 dogs including 47 ten shilling dogs. The ranger reported that he had visited several portions of the County but had found no wandering stock. In this connection the Clerk said that he understood from the ranger that complaints had been received, but there was apparently some wireless informa tion given as almost invariably on the ranger's arrival stock was conspicious by its absence. The Chairman said the ranger would have to get out earlier in the morning.

The Engineer's report was read and dealt with as under. On Cr Scoular's suggestion the Engineer was instructed to report on the roads at Wallington's and Clare's. Cr Spain asked that some protection be made at Muttontown Gully, where some damage had been done by floods. Ifc also asUed that some improvement be made to the approach to the Clyde bridge.—Agreed to. Cr McKnight asked that the suggestions of the Engineer in his riding be carried out, Regarding the flood he pointed out that the settlers were alarmed at the danger from the river, and he was of opinion that the Govt, should be asked to assist. It was ; however, imperative that something should be done to protect the road. The sum of L3O was voted. The Engineer and the P. W. D. to be asked to report on the bigger scheme to control the river Cr Weaver asked that rape holders be notified to culvert races on the new roadline to the Powerhouse.—Agreed to.
