—+ The Vincent County Council meets in the Council_Chambers, Clyde, on Wednesday. A meeting of the Clyde Hockey Club is called for to-night. Mr J. P. Mcßride has disposed of his Kawarau Falls station to a Mr Herbert of Oamaru. A brilliant meteor, which lit up the whole country side, was witnessed at Clyde at about 8.30 last evening. The weather continues fine and dry and a good, steady rain is badly wanted. Indications were promising yesterday, but a light shower was all that happened. The fishing season commences on Sunday next. The various streams are low and clear, an unusual experience at this season of the year and if the present dry, fine weather continues good catches should be general. Licenses and tackle can be obtained from Mr W. Sutherland, Clyde. The two banks at Naseby are to be removed to Ranfurly, and the work of dismantling the buildings has commenced. Pending this work being carried out business is being carried on in temporary premises. In view *of the large number of names omitted from the electoral roll, people would be well-advised to take the precaution to see that their names appear thereon. The weekly card parly in the Bowling Club's pavilion, will be held as usual on Wednesday night. Handsome prizes have been donated for lady and gent winning most games for the series. Mr Bringans and Mrs S. A Stevens were the winners last week. An incident showing the maternal instinct well developed in the lower animal was witnessed at Lauder the other day, writes a correspondent. A resident travelling in his motor heard a considerable squealing, and on investigating discovered a hare in a very excited state with its head in the air running through a paddock, and also a hawk flying with a young hare or lippet in its talons. The lippet being too heavy for it, the hawk had to come to the ground with its victim, when the mother ha«-e would spring at the hawk striking it with its feet, eventually succeeding in driving the hawk away. The Lake County Jockey Club held a meeting recently when it was disclosed that there was a deficit of Collectors were appointed to hunt up new subscribers and subs outstanding The meeting was adjourned for a fortnight. Last week (says the 'Clutha Leader') the South Otago Freezing Company took out of its freezing chambers the carcasses of calves that were slaughtered in 1915, and which have thus been in the chambers for seven years. The writer dined off a roast of this veal, and so from the "inside'' knowledge thus gained can vouch for the excellent" quality of the meat, it being impossible to tell it from freshly killed veal. Giving evidence concerning the manner in which a five-gallon jar of beer quickly disappears in a No-license district, a witness in the Mokau liquor cases in the Magistrate's Court at New Plymouth stated that a jar usually attracted « number of men to the vicinity and no one was turned away. "Thai's one of the features of the hospitality of your district, isn't it ? suggested counsel. Several faithful husbands in Balclutha are endeavouring to find out the identity of a certain young lady who has become somewhat of an annoyance lately. Her practice fsays the 'Free Press' is to call at a hoase and inquire if Mr Blank (naming the householder) is at home. If he is. she , says: "1 wonder if he would see me home as I am afraid of the dark" On several occasions Mr Blank has been in bed, but has obligingly got up and accompanied the lady. however, have actually 'seen her home' J as the place sne names as her tempor- , ary abode (she is staying with ] 'friends") is usually so remote as to \ tempt the chivalrous one to only pro- j ceed part of the way with the "lady , fayre." The lady is stated io be young ; and prepossessing, and her uncere- ! monious visits at a late hour of the night have been strongly resented by J some married ladies, in which cases the 'gude man" of the house has not . accompanied the visitor home, ( At Hull's Pictures on Thursday < night, a Special Mack Sennet eight- I reel Comedy "A small Town Idol" will j be screened, The picture is decorated « with five hundred beautitul girls, and 1 being brimful of humor, will put dim- J pies into the cheeks of the world. The following par is from the New Zealand Times:—An interesting point was brought out at an informal discussion on hospital affairs at the meeting of the Rakai Road Board. Members gave instances of cases where men had received substantial sums as compensation for accidents, or had been befriended financially by farmers in case of sickness, and yet had gloried in evading payment "of their hospital accounts. These accounts had ultimately to be met by ratepayers in the form of rates levied by the county council. The members were unanimously of opinion that provision should be made for the impounding of sufficient money from the compensation allowance to pay the hospital account. The presiding Magistrate. Mr Geo. Cruickshank, Esq., caused a laugh to go round the Court room during the course of the quarterly meeting of the Wakatipu Licensing Committee last Thursday. Prior to the members retiring to deliberate on one of the applications for a renewal of a license considerable discussion took place in open meeting regarding the form of drainage adopted in respect of this particular house It was stated by the police that the suggestion to substitute for the present septic tank a line of pipes (about 800 ft) te carry the drain age to the river did not seem to be favourably regarded by the interested parties. In view of the forthcoming licensing poll they were afraid lest it be left a big white elephant on their hands. His Worship quickly retorted: "Eight hundred feet of pipe line would certainly be a pretty long trunk; I don't know about the elephant!'' Wakatipu 'Mail.' When swallows nestle 'math the eaves And faintly stir the autumn leaves. There waft to me as night-boats glide Sweet songs of love at eventide. Chill winds blow keen across the bay As twilight slowly wanes away, And that brings fear of colds, be sure, And thought of Woods' Great Peppermint Cure.
