1 + The Vincent County Council meets on the 23rd inst., when the principal business will be the striking of the rate. • The Ball under the auspices of the R* S. A- at Alexandra on Thursday evening last, was most •enjoyable and successful in every way- There was a good attendance, visitors being present from all parts of the district* Excellent music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Partridge, Piano; Mr H.J* Partridge, violin; Mr W. Bringans, Cornet; and Mr J. D. Thompson, Double Bass. Quite the feature of the evening was the splendid supper. In reply to a recent article in these columns regarding the cultivation of lucerne, in which the Agricultural Dept, expressed its willingness to supply any information, a subscriber writes complaining that nearly six months ago when contemplating planting- he wrote to the Dept, but has not received a reply* This looks like a case of carelessness or indifference on the part of the Dept., but there is of course always a chance of the letter having gone astray. Hull's Pictures this week, on Thursday night as usual, have a special attraction in the great picture “Tarzan of the Apes.” This is a thrilling story of a ship-wreck, and a child being left on an island* An ape, which has lost its offspring, takes the child and brings it up with the apes* Over 1,000 people were employed in producing the picture. Although having started late in the season, the Progressive Euchre Tournament arranged by the Ophir Card Club has been a great success, large numbers coming from Omakau and Opbir to participate in the Tourney. Play commences sharp at eight every Wednesday night, and after the games are finished at 10 p* m* the ladies provide an excellent supper which is much appreciated by all* It is the tention of the Club to provide first prizes for the lady and gentleman gaining the most points at the end of the season* Booby prizes will also be awarded* The duties of Secretary and Treasurer are carried out by Mr L. The Bowling-Croquet-Tennis Social in the Town Hall, Clyde, on Friday last attracted a big attendance, and it proved a most enjoyable evening* Music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Love, and an excellent supper was provided. There passed away at Dunedin an old and well-known resident of Central Otago, in the person of Mr J* D. Me Lennan* The deceased gentleman, after his marriage, carried on farming at Hawea Flat, afterwards removing to Matakanui and later to Auripo* Owing to ill-health (heart trouble) he sold his property at Auripo some six years ago and removed to Dunedin. Of a genial and kindly disposition 'Mr Me Lennan had many friends, and this fact was made manifest by the beautiful floral tributes at the funeral:— Own correspondent. The Cromwell Bowling Club has held its annual meeting. Mr C* Smart, is the new president, and Mr D. Hatton was re-elected secretary. There was a decline of fully 10 per cent on the best classes of skins, other sorts ruling firm at round about last sale's rates.
