HOCKEY.

The Hockey match Clyde v Alex* andra Club t was played at Clyde on Saturday and resulted in a win for Clyde by one goal to nil. The first spell was very even, play being taken . quickly from one end to the other, but there was no finish, several chances being missed by both sides through inaccurate shooting. L. Hannay on the right wing made some nice runs and centrfcfl'nicely, but E. Annan who was playing safely at full back saved her side time and again. From one of these rushes eaily in the spell Alexandra lost a sure goal by kicking the bail between the posts. From the free hit Clyde cleared and play was taken to the other end. At this stage A, Hepburn was responsible for some nice work, but she was just a little slow' iu centring, a good plan to follow being to centre hard lor the circle as soon as the 25 is reached. A sole goal was missed by H. Keddell troin a centre by A. Hepburn. Shortly alterwards 13, Hesson in taking a free hit close to the circle made a very poor hit and M. Manning dashing in secured possession, look the ball into the circle but made a very poor attempt at goal, again losing what looked like a sure goal. From this on to th££**l?nd of the spell Alexandra had tne bestol the play. The first spelt ended with no score. The second spell started with give and lake play’, but it was not long before Clyde got the upper hand, and for the £most part ol the time were attacking. Certainly only one goal was scored, but it was bad shooting that kept the score down. In this speli the Alexandra backs had a lot of work to do, and came out of it well, M. Lawry especially saving her side by her accuracy. Clyde forward combination was not working well, this no doubt being due to H. Keddell being off colour, but the other tw’o M. Stevens and D. Clark played hard games. It was by a nice run by D. Clark that taken to Alexandra circle where Clyde got the goal. Harley, the goalkeeper sent the ball quickly to the side but A, Hepburn promptly returned hard and H. Keddell with a nice turn sent the ball between the posts. From this on to the end of the game the reds w’ere attacking most of the time H. Keddell made a nice run and g ot#s far as the circle easily but her shortly afterwards D. Clark with a nice piece ol play’ took the ball to the circle to within two yards ol the goal line, but again bad shooting lost a goal, the ball going a lew inches outside. Ihe game ended shortly afterwards. Taken on the whole the game was a good one and the belter team won. Both sides made the same mistake of playing the lorwards too far back when defending. The forwards should not go back to defend as the backs ought to do that, and the forwards only get in the way and cause themselves unnecessary running. For Alexandra all the players played a hard game, M. Lawry, as lull back J. Carline, L. Hannav, M. Thomson, being the pick, ,I‘or Ciycie, E. Annan as full back was very sate. M. Manning, as usual, played a hno game. E, McSwan, A. Hepburn, M. Stevens and D. Clark all played well. H. Keddell, who was decidedly «fl: colour, was badly missed by the Reds who always look to her to lead the attacks. A trial match is to be held at Alexandra on Saturday, and the county’ match at Roxburgh the lollowing Saturday.
