FOOTBALL.

(By “Drop-kick.”)

The following are the relative positions of the contesting teams, playing under the Vincent Sub-union, as they now stand :

Saturday’s fixtures in Vincent are:— Clyde v. Alexandra at Alexandra, and Cromwell v. Lowburn at Lowburn. A great deal of interest is centred in the Clyde-Alexandra match, as on the result will depend to a great extent what team is to win the coveted flag, At present with two matches to go all round, Clyde is leading with 10 points, Alexandra and Cromwell being next with 8 points each, The competition is in an interesting stage, and as a result a great deal of interest is being taken in the game—indeed it is quite a number of years since the general public followed the matches so closely. Clyde play Cromwell on August 16th —not the 9th. A meeting of the Vincent Sub-union takes place at Alexandra at 1 p m. on Saturday. Delegates are requested to roll up sharp to'time as there is considerable business to be done. The Tuapeka Sub-union have decided to play Vincent on August 23rd. CLYDE (17) v. BANNOCKBURN (0) The above match was played at Clyde on Saturday afternoon, when the local team had a comfortable victory—winning by the margin of 17 points to nil. The visitors were represented by their full strength and were considered by some to ha\e a good chance of lowering the colours of the red and blacks. However, they never looked like winning, and their supporters must have been disappointed with their showing. For the first twenty-five minutes home team gave an excellent exhibition, and put on 9 points (two tries and a penalty goal). From the kick off the ball was taken into the visitors’ 25 where Crawford narrowly missed scoring. The visitors were hard pressed, and a couple of passing rushes nearly penetrated their defence. The first try, the result of a passing rush started by Spain was the result of a great dash by Lcs. Weaver. It was a pretty try and he well deserved the applause he got. The next score a couple of minutes later was the outcome of a good effort by Mac Crawford. The leather came out from a scrum and Spain sent it out to Crawford, who cut in nicely and dived over an opposing back, scoring in a good position. The kick at goal failed. The home team continued to attack strongly and they went near scoring on more than one occasion. From a mark about ten yards inside halt-way Dawson placed a great goal. —Clyde 9, Bannockburn o. The remainder of the spell consisted of tight uninteresting play. The visitors got within striking distance on several occasions but they lacked the necessary finish to score. The second spell was more even but towards the end Clyde had a decided advantage. Mac Crawford scored a nice try from a passing rush, which Spain converted. and a moment later Jack Weaver made a great solo eftort, taking the ball from the kick off until he touched down between the posts. Gye’s kick struck one of the uprights and bounced back. —Clyde 17, Bannockburn o. A feature of the above match was the great number fof infringments made by the home team—the visitors being relieved time after time with free kicks. The match, lam sorry to say, was not played in the best spirit, and Mr King (the referee) h_ad occasion to order one of the visiting team (Cooper) off the field. Smith, a visiting back was fortunate in escaping the same fate, as he deliberately struck an opponent in the face fortunate y for him when the referee’s back was turned. There was too a lot of unneecessary dumping indulged in, it being quite a common thing to see a player bowled over after he had parted with the ball or on taking a mark, I am sorry to make these remarks, particularly as the matches up till now have been so free from unpleasant features.
