FRUIT-GROWING.

This district has always had a reputation second to none in New Zealand as a producer of the very finest quality of stone fruit as well as apples, grapes, tomatoes, etc., the only drawback being the scarcity of water for irrigating. Since the advent of the railway however a good deal more attention than formerly has been given to the industry. Mr C. Weaver is this season planting out a fairly large area at the lower end of Farnscleugh and Mr J- E. Bodkin of Monte Chhristo has added a fine block of over 1200 trees to the area which he has under fruit. Most of our other growers are adding to their orchards to some extent and we have good authority for stating that one of our former residents, now in business in Dunedin, has recently purchased a fair sized block of excellent fruit-growing land situated at the upper end of Earnscleugh Flat and intends going into the business in a thorough manner. We extend a hearty welcome to our old townsman and trust that he will prove the precursor of many more to take up this healthful and lucrative occupation. The attention now being devoted to the industry locally only strengthens the opinion we have so often expressed that this district will prove to be a second California and it will not be long before the people of this Dominion find it out.
