CROMWELL.

(From our own correspondent.)

The fine frosty weather being experienced is responsible for the rapid subsidence of tne rivers which will soon be at winter level.

The Alpine Consols has succeeded in negotiating the rip. It was a hard task as the water was washing over her decks before she got into smooth water. The ground she left though good was too heavy and rough for her machinery. The old Hartley is still on good solid ground, and there must be several patches in the claim that will pay handsomely. On the Clutha Shine 1 has a large staff of men engaged in the necessary repairs to ladder and elevator. Three boiler makers arrived from Dunedin during the week. No 2is on improved ground as her return of 42 ounces shows. For two successive weeks the outside bearings of the bottom tumbler of the Rising Sun gave a lot of trouble and causing a loss of a lot of dredging time, but last week she put in 132 hours dredging, so the return of 47 ounces was something like her old form. The Punt ground does not seem to improve. At Quartz Reef Point tne Elevating Sluicing Co., arc in full swing but unfortunately have not sufficient water to beat the great influx that comes through the old ground in the river, consequently the bottom cannot be reached. This is a pity as good gold is known to exist in the claim.
