In connection with the brutal assault on a woman at Lin wood on Thursday night, William Cotter, Ernest Nicholls (Alias Power, Alias McCallum) and' William Nicholls were charged to-day with assaulting Sarah Talloon and robbing her of £2. On the application of the police they were remanded until Wednesday. SUICIDE. Thames 9th. Elsie Johnston, aged 23, drowned herself in the river en Saturday. Her mind was deranged. ACCIDENTS. An elderly man named Andrews residing at Wingatui met with an accident to his spine by falling down the steps and was' removed to the hospital. MOTOR ACCIDENT.

A motor accident occurred at Wallacetown on Friday night to Mr J, F. Wilson of Invercargill, dentist, as he was driving into town. The railway line crosses the road and the goods train was standing at the station, the engine being well past one side of the road and the van on the other side with the trucks across the road. In the motor car were two ladies and a boy besides the driver. The latter did not see the engine and drove straight on in the belief that the road was clear, the car dashing into one of the trucks that were across the way. The adult occupants were not thrown from the car but the boy was thrown heavily against the back seat and was rather badly bruised. The night was a misty one and the drher did not see the trucks till he was right against them, but the impact was not great as he was proceeding with some caution. The radiator and windshield of the car were badly damaged and the front axle broken, the extent of the damage being about £3O or £4O. Under the circumstances it is considered that the motorists were extremely fortunate. POISONING FATALITY.

Gore, May 8 1 The three year old son of Mr J. G. MacKay picked up some pollard used for rabbit poisoning yesterday afternoon and mistaking it for oatcake ate some.
