MUSICAL.

We have received from Messrs C. Begg and Co., Dunedin a copy of the “ Wakatipu Waltz.” composed by Mr John Allan, of Springvale. So far as the mechanical part is concerned it is remarkably well got up. the music printing being distinct and faultless, whilst the outside title-page is exceedingly neat and illustrated by a view of the head of Lake Wakatipu. Of the composition the Duly Times says : “ It is very melodious and quite simple, and appears to be quite original The author has succeeded in depicting some of the sombreness which the lake scenery inspires. The 1 Wakatipu Waltz’ should become popular, and the composer may be congratulated on his success.” The Globe says ! u The composition in two or three movements shows a great deal of origi nality. The music is varied in style, sometimes dreamy, and at others sparkling ; and as the composition is well within the possibilities of any ordinary drawing room performer, besides being highly pleasing to the ear, it should become very popular.” Our own musical critic says : It is a decided success, an artist’s dream painted in song, with the music while simple and sweet yet strong, and worthy of the recognition of all lovers of pure music.
