London, June 4. A number of negro navvies in New I Orleans have lynched a gang of three gamblers whom they discovered cheating, i It is alleged that there is a secret naval convention between Italy and England. _ A Turkish official has arrived at Kukuilisse with the ransom for the release of the English and German tourists, but the brigands object to the escort of 28 who accompany the officers, and the negotiations I have been suspended. . .. I It is reported that the Caledonian Kailway Company intend to offer Mr Eddy, chief commissioner of the New South \V ales railways, L4OOO a year to return and manage their lines. The Russian press has been ordered not to allude to the famine. Starving peasants are robbing houses for food, and those not paying taxes have been flogged. Collisions have taken place between the peasants and troops, in which many lives were lost. St. Petersburg, June 4. Famine is raging in several provinces of Russia and thousands of peasants have died of want. re London, June 6. The census for London and suburbs shows the population to be 5 033,000. In the Mouse of Commons to-day Sir Michael Hicks-Beach, president of the Board of Trade stated that the question of further legislative powers being given to restrict the influx of foreign emigrants to England had engaged the serious attention of the Government, but it was doubtful if any practical good would result from action being taken The Rev, Hermann Adler, who has been acting provisionaUy as chief rabbi since the death of his father, has now been duly appointed chief rabbi. The Minister of Finance declares that Portugal lias expended one million sterling in protecting her rights in Mashonaland, and that the Government are absolutely satisfied with the Anglo Portuguese Convention. Paris, June 6. The French press are very bitter against England owing to the virtual admission made by Sir James Fergusson. Political •Secretary of the Foreign Office, to the effect that the Marquis of Salisbury had agreed that Great Britain would protect Italy in the event of a French naval attack. St. Petersburg, June 5. The British Consul at Lilian a port on the Baltic Sea, has warned the refugee Jews not to emigrate to England, ao there is , very little prospect of their obtaining empljyment there. A number of the Jews are emigrating to Australia. Ottawa, June 5. The House of Commons by a majority of 32 rejected a proposal to introduce the one-man-one-vote system.
