BLACKS V. CROMWELL. The first match of the season between the above clubs was played on the Clyde Cricket Ground on Saturday last, and resulted in a victory for Blades on the first innings by 28 runs, but if the game had been played ont there Is no doubt that Cromwell would have suffered a more;Bevt.re defeat, as they had lost seven wickets in the second innings for 17 runs, against a total of 186 to win the match. The game commenced shortly after 12 o’clock, Cromwell taking the field ; but the first innings of each does not cad for special mention with the exception of the batting of Hogan, Pitches (Blacks), and Davidson (Cromwell) who secured their runs in good style, the brilliant hitting of Hogan, anil the steady play of Davidson and Pitches coming in for well-merited applause. The fielding all round was very good, as was also the longstopping of Ryan and Foreman, the former having no byes recorded against him, while the latter had bat two, Tbeisecond innings of Blacks was remarkable for the number of double-figure scores, six out of iho ten men making an average of over 22 ; and left no doubt that the Cromwell bowling was completely mastered. The innings closed for the respectable total of 157, thus with 28 t > the good on tha first innings, left Cromwell with 186 to win ; but they could only succeed in putting together 17 for the loss of 7 wickets when stumps were drawn, thus leaving Blacks the victors by 28 runs on the first innings. The bowling of Pitches and Ferguson (Blacks), and Davidson (Cromwell), was very good, but as tho analysis were not kept we are unable to publish them.
