EDUCATIONAL.

The Wellington Board's Position.

[per press association.]

Wellington, Last night,

The intimation given by the Wellington Education Board to some 40 of their teachers does not necessarily imply the certainty of reduced staffs or salaries, but is intended to apprise the teachers of the possibility of both, and to give them the opportunity to make any explanation they may deem desirable. It appears that in many instances schools have been overstaffed and overpaid on an attendance basis, and as the funds of the Board are at a low ebb it becomes essential for the Board to consider the quest'on of lessening staffs and salaries where circumstances warrant it. It is stated that there has been a general falling-off of attendance .all over the colony of late, and no reasonable explanation can be offered for this state of things.
