HASTINGS.

[OWN COEfiESPONDENT.]

A meeting of tbe yard committee Of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on the showground to-day. There were present —Messrs Joseph Williams (president), T. Crosse, Arch. McLean, Geoff. Potts, and the new secretary (Mr W. F. J. Anderson). It was decided to tar the floor of the produce shed, and to provide increased accommodation for dogs and fowls. The question of the parade was also discussed, but no decision was arrived at.

_he Roy's Hill matter is of great interest to this district. The Mayor went up yesterday, aad to-day Mr A. L. D. Fraser and Mr Hales (Government engineer) were to inspect it. A member of the Pukahu River Board informed me to-day that the amount of water there is simply astonishing, considering that there has been no rain lately. In fact he describes it as a perfect sea. The action of Mr Hugh Campbell in taking immediate steps is fully appreciated, and it is believed will be found to have prevented much damage. The Mayor (Mr Dennett) and Crs. Beilbyand Crosse this morning paid a visit to the quarry, the property of Mrs Chapman, which is situated behind the racecourse. This property was offered to the Council a% the last monthly meeting. Prior to the meeting this morning Mr Curtiss went out and dug in several places, so that the committee could judge better. The report will not be made public until the next monthly meeting. It is understood, however, that the result of the examination is not favorable to the purchase. The mails lost from the Patea coach (which was capsized in the Tarauarau iiv?r last Tuesday) have not been recovered. They were all in one sack. It is the opinion of those who understand the river that thty will be washed up about Maraekakaho, and as there is a reward offered, our friends there might keep a look out for t hem. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, before Mr Beilby,. J.P., two first offenders for drunkenness were dealt with in the usual way. Mr Hill, Inspector of Schools, is at present on a visit to the Hastings Catholic schools.
