ARBITRATION COURT.

[per press association.] Wellington, This day. The Arbitration Court made practically the same award in the linotype case as at Auckland, namely hours, 7 ; wages, £3 for day and £3 6s for night work ; overtime, one-third extra ; piece work, 3d with fat without, a farthing extra on type larger thau brevier ; one apprentice to every four machines unless less than four used ; holidays, Christmas and New Year's Days, and Good Friday, and double rates if required to work, time and a-half allowed for Labor Day. The demand that operators be restricted to members of the Wellington Union was refused, but preference to unionists was granted on the condition that competent men be admitted without ballot or election. A clause was inserted providing that where a man is unable to earn full rate a special agreement may be made to meet his case by the employer and the union. The award is to run till June 5, 1902. In reply to a representative of the union the Judge said no evidence had been brought forward except theory to show why wages should be increased.

In a friendly between the Seamen's Union and .the Union Company, the Arbitration Court held that although in the case of four watches in the stokehold, the men give eight hours per day, the watches on the days of arrival and sailing must count as » portion of the eight hours per day, whereas in the case of six hour watches there was no question of eight hours „ day with them. The Bakers Union fought, • with the concurrent c of the masleiv, to bring a number of employers under the award, who had refused to come in. The Court intimated it would make the award as desired.
