EVADING THE LAW.

[per press association.]

Dunedin, Last night.

At the Police Coiut a case came up under the Employment of Boj'sand Girls Without Payment Prevention Act. The case was against Mrs Gill, who was charged with having received a premium as a consideration for the employment of a girl under 18 year?. The contention for the defence was that the girl was not employed in the same way as other girls. Mrs Gill received a premium of £2 to teach the girl millinery in three months. The giil could come when she liked and could go when she liked. Mr Carew, S.M., said the arrangement appeared to him to be a device to overcome the provisions of the Act. The work the girl did was for the benefit of Mrs Gill, who showed her what she was to do. He had considerable doubt about the girl being able to come and go as she pleased. A fine of £1 and costs was imposed, and the second charge was withdrawn.
