HASTINGS.

[OWN OOBEKSPONDENT.]

The School Committee met last night. Present—Messrs W. O. BSaddison (ohairman), M'Quillan, H. H. Bunt, Morgan, and George. Ihe annua) moeting of householders take" plaoe on Monday, April 4th, at the District School. The Oommittee resolved to meet there at 6.39 p.m., the meeting of electors beicg fixed for 7 p.m. The headmaster, Mr Umith. enolosed a oheque for £6 4s 6d for stationery fee.. The attendance at the school, he reported, had increased in a satisfactory manner, whioh he attributed largely to the action of the Education Board in appointing truant oflioers. Some routine business having been transacted, and au account for £3 10s passed, the meeting adjourned l . It is gratifying t) note that the parents of children have taken the hints frequently convoyed to them of late in the Daily rii-is-obavh, and h.vo sent their children to sohool, without the unpleasant experience of a summons. It is to be hoped that there will be no need for the extreme measure in Hastings. Ihere &te, however, one or two parents who are _till obstinate, bat they will find persistence veiy unprofitable. Great interest is being taken at Waipatu n tho forthcoming meeting of tbe Maoris with the Governor u_d tho Premier, and a great number of other Maoris will be present. A oonfereuca of this kiod, if well advised and oonduoted on proper business lines, will bo of greater service than all the Maori Parliaments put together.
