fPEB FBKSe AESOOUTION.—OOPnUGHT.I London, January 29. A farmer has been arrested at Scarborough on a charge of having committed 17 forgeries in America for sums aggregating 1,000,000 dollars. Prices at to-day's wool sales were the highest during the present series of sales. The American representatives bought all the lots offered. Australian butter, fair business, prices unchanged. The cheese market is booming, and prices show an advance of 2s. Silver, 2s sfd. The Mansion House Indian famine relief fund amounts to £171,000. January 30. In the Cowley divorce suit both Earl Oowley and Mrs Charrington denied adultery, but the Earl admitted two offences with other women. The jury found the charges not proved, and were discharged. In consequence of the Earl's admissions, the Countess applied to amend the petition, and the hearing was adjourned. Prices at yesterday's wool sales were well maintained, and little was withdrawn. The total quantity catologued up to date is 113,294 bales, of which 99,240 have been sold. Babbit skins are in brisk demand, with a half-penny to a penny decline. Four thousand nine hundred and forty-two packages of kauri gam were offered, of which 1414 were sold at about half-a-crown decline; threequarters scraped brought from 92s ; half scraped Gss. January 31. Captain Meryon has been appointed to the command of H.M.S. Mildura, and Captain John Jones commander of the Katoomba. Captain George Neville has been re-appointed Commandant of tbe Victorian Navy. Staff Surgeon John Thomas has been appointed to the Orlando, Staff Surgeon Lilley to the Mildura, and Surgeon E. H. McSherry to the Wallaroo. Washington, January 29. Senator Sherman, who is to be Secretary of State in the McKinley Cabinet, has advised the Senate to abandon Senator Morgan's Nicaragua Canal Bill, guaranteeing the Canal Company 100,000,000 dollars in 3 per cent bonds. He intimated that after Mr McKinley enters upon the Presidency steps will be taken to secure a treaty providing that the United States shall practically build the canal. Mr Sherman is confident that the Senate will approve the Anglo-Ameri-can Arbitration Treaty. Mr Hyman Gage, a Chicago banker, has accepted the Secretaryship of the Treasury in Mr McKinley's Administration. Athens, January 29. The University students, irritated because one of the professors rebuked them for hindering an operation, have broken into open revolt. They stoned the police, garrisoned the University, and established a cordon of armed sentries. Constantinople, January 29. The Porte is uneasy at the approach of the Mahomedan fast of Bamadan, as religious riots are likely to occur. Cairo, January 29. The Dervishes have abandoned the camp at Adlgrat, and retreated.
