SWIMMING TOURNAMENT.

The weather did not favor the amateur swimming competitions yesterday. Drizzling rain fell at intervals, while a rather heavy sea was rolling in, whioh made rapid swimming difficult. Nevertheless, a large number of competitors faced the starter. The limit men in each heat proved too good for the competitors on the scratch mark, though in smoother water the results might have been different. Life buoys, with ropes attaohed, were plaoed in a handy position on the beach, in case of accident, but fortunately there was no occasion to bring them into use. Messrs EagletOD, Brewin, and Chapman, who acted as a committee, Mr layers, as starter, and Mr O. D, Kennedy as judge, saw that all the necessary arrangements were satisfactorily oartied out. Two of the competitors were thoroughly fatigued at the end of their journey, and had to be assisted to the shore. The following are the results:—

Hutohinson (ISseo eaoh). From a good start the limit man was never caught, though the competitors with less starts swam strongly, but the distance was not long enough to enable the lead that Lang had secured to be decreased.

Jago (-6s<J<s)j The following also started :—J. MajorVXjßarry, M. M'Farlane (40seoeaoh), J. H. Kelly (25seo each), F- P. Dujrfeby (ISsec each). As in the preViuUuoWft-iJ^ B .
