Hastings.

[OWN COBBESPONDENT.]

A statutory meeting of the Hastings Borough Council was held last evening to finally proclaim and take over a private road as a public one Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr Baruett), and Crs. Larid, Beilby, Hughes, and Murdoch. Proposed by Cr. Beilby, seconded by Cr. Land, "That Wall road be declared a public road." Carried unanimously. The Council then adjourned. It has now been decided definitely to hold the forthcoming Trotting Club meeting at Hastings, instead of Paki Paki as intended The course will be near Stortford Lodge Hotel, and a ground is heini? prepared for the purpose. During the performance of the farce at the Town Hall on Wednesday the audience and actors wero annoyod by the deep growls and of two dogs. The owners of these animals should have more consideration from their friends than to bring their dogs with them to euch places. Another point occurred to a good many people both on the occasion of the gymasium and phonograph evenings, and that is— what would happen in case of fire or even an alarm of one ? This hint is thrown out so that in the contemplated alterations proper and copious means of exit may be arranged for. The streets aro now metalled with shingle, and the grinding noise made by the vehicles in crushing it must wonderfully assist the calculations of the bank clerks and others. The ooachmakers and horseshoerd will be glad though. Speaking of horseshoeing, reminds me that I have heard that a meeting of blacksmiths wa3 held at Jull's Hotel on Thursday from all round the district, the object being to set things right generally, especially with regard to uniform prices. I have not heard tho result.

The handsome costumes worn by the gentleman at the gymnasium play wore, I am informed, the work of Mrs J. J. Price, of the Athenteum.
