l_H FENCE. Frederick Hopkins was again brought up for sentence. Mr. Kitto paid the lad bad been with him fourteen months. Ho wus honest, and he had had tho handling of money. Ho was a
honest and good working lad. After he left him the boy had not been up to any mischief. Had never heard anything against Hopkins. The lad's stepfather was a laborer. He never wished to have a more honest lad or a quieter one in his employ. His Honor said he was not disposed to call it an offence vrhat he did when he was mine vearsold.
The lad's mother stated he was sent to an industrial school for taking sixpence from a child when she was ill in bed. He was brought up as a neglected child. His Honor: Then you ought to have had the punishment, and not he. The mother said she had always looked after him, and she was quite as respectable as the parents of the other boy, whei had been got out on probation. It would do him harm if he were sent to. gaol. It was not justice that the one boy should be punished and the other get off. His Honor said he would let the matter stand till Saturday morning. He would consider the matter of probation, but it would be necessary to get some one to give him employment, and for Mr Gibbons to say tho boy was honest when he could have been dishonest. CONCEALMENT OF BIETH. Mary Kyle, who yesterday was charged with manslaughter, and which charge was abandoned by tho Crown Prosecutor on the jury disagreeing, was charged with concealment of birth., Mr Redstone was chosen foreman of tho i ur y- ...
Accused pleaded not guilty. Evidence was taken at length, which was very similar to that given yesterday. Mr Cresswell addressed" tbe jury on behalf of the prisoner. His Honorsummed np, and shortly after one b'clook' the jury retired to consider their verdict. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy. The accused was ordered to be brought up to-morrow morning for sentence. The Court resumed at half-past two.
ILLEGALLY PAWNINO. Denis Stainslaus McCarthy was charged with having illegally pawned a silver watch the property of one Henry Blackburn. Mr Wilcocks was chosen foreman of the jury. The evidence was the samo as that given in the case of larceny against the accused. Tho jury returned a verdict of guilty. Prisoner was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labor. This concluded the criminal sessions.
