Sly Grog Selling.
DEFENDANT HEAVILY FINED
The adjourned Mcmwhanga case of alleged nly grog selling againnt John Laurenseu, <//;«.« "Jack the Juck," wae heard at the K.M. Court this mon.ing. It will be remembered that a fortnight ago the evidence of three Maori witnesses was taken, and theoo natives, in their evidence, stated that ;i bottle of whiskey wue bought by one of them from thu defendant who wan duly paid tou shillings for the liquor, and that iibout the time tho whiskey ■ was sold there was v, great deal of drunkenness at Moawhanga, although there was not a public-house near the place for miles. Tho case was then adjourned for the purpose of enabliug the defendant to get his witness. James Murtagb, a sawyer at Moawhanga, was odUed this morning on defendant's behalf, and ho stated that the men up there were in tho habit of sending to Herbertville for whiskey ; occasionally they got a couple of canes from there. On the 21th August lie saw Laurmisen givo tho native Whi Whi a bottle of 'whiskey, and then told him to clear out. The K.M. lined tho defendant £20, with costs £1 I7f, μ-itnesnos' expenses £lo 12s, iv default oue month's impriaonlnoiit with hard labor. Mr. Crcsswe'll, who appeared for the sa:d his client was not likely to pay the niouuy, and 60 would accept the alternative.
