The Council met last niffht. Present: Tho Mayor, and Crs. Beilby, Foreman, Fitsßoy,*Land, Murdoch, McEwan, Tanner, Williams, and Wellwood.
A report was received from the Mayor, setting forth a scheme for a wattir closet system, and recommending its adoption.— Moved by Cr. Foreman, seconded by Cr. Wellwood, " That the matter be deferred, pending the raising of the loan."—Carried. Tho Road Overseer's report was read, recommending that fresh tenders be called for forming portions of Southampton street and Heretaunga road.
The Inspector of report was read on the sanitary condition of the various hotels, which -was satisfactory, and informing the Council that the press mt night-soil contract would expire in Itecember.—A committee was appointed to consider the most efficient manner of carry ing out the night-soil contract. A petition was read from Mr Whitehead and others, asking the Council to form footpath in Avenue road.—Overseer to inspect and do what is necessary. From the engineer of the Gulcher Electric Light Company re introducing the light into Hastings.—Received. From the Railway Reform League, Auckland, asking tho co-operation of the Council.—Received. The question was raised of payment to the Bank of N.S. W. of tho sum of £6 ICs 6d, cost of cablegram re loan.—Amount to j be paid. __ I Tho committoe appointed to confer with ! the Fire Brigade reported that no meeting! had been held, but they had leurned the requirements of tho Brigade—another gas lamp at Faulknor's corner, and an allowance of £50. —The committee to meet and report to the next meeting of the Council. It wus agreed that the railway authorities be written to re permiiision to uso railway reserve for recreative purposes until such time as the ground was required. Moved by Councillor Murdoch, seconded by Councillor Tanner, —"That tenders be called for tho services of a regular ranger." —An amendment was moved by Councillor Williams, "That it bo an instruction b_ the Road Overseer that when, throng h press of work, the surfaceman canm )t attend to it, additional labor be employed.." —Amendment carried.
Accounts were then passed for payma.'at, and the meeting adjourned.
