Captain Edwin wires at 12.23 p.m. :— " Every indication of very heavy north to west and south-west gale ; glass farther fall, and heavy rain."
Our Waipawa correspondent wires that Peter Bergstrom, a resident at Waipukurau, hung himself in a shed adjoining his house at 1.35 this afternoon. An inquent "will be held to-morrow.
Our Wellington correspondent wires :— " Major Campbell has, after thirty-five years' service, resigned his position as clerk of tho House of Representatives and Clerk o5 Parliaments."
Lagor, who was injured in tho Hurdle Race, was brought into the Criterion Hotel, where he was attended to by a doctor. It is supposed tlio horse hit him on the chest after he was thrown off at the jump.
The Pall Mall Gazette says that a titled Englishman recently wooed and won the heart of a simple Norwegianpeasantmaiden. When he sought her hand from her father in marriage, the sturdy countryman replied,
" I will sco; I must sro with you and see what sort of man you are before I consent." He came over to England, saw tho lover's home, hoard of his position, and satisfied himself that all was right. " Yes," said he, " you may have my daughter ; you are a right sort of man." Nor did tho idea that she was wedding a title ever seem to weigh a feathor in tho balance of his judgment.
