The settlement of the war between the British Nonh Borneo Company and the inland tribes is satisfactory intelligence. The Island of Borneo is naturally one of the richest in the world. On tho northwest coaet is tho State of Sarawak, ■with a population of 280,000. It is under British influence, though not a British dependency, being ruled by an English rajah, Mr C. J Brooko, nephew of tho late Sir James Brooke, who, as the first rajah, ruled from 1811 to 186 S. Under the just and equitable rule of the Brookes, Sarawak has been reclaimed irom barbarism, and tho Malays, Dyaks, and other savage tribes have been changed from lawless head-hunters and pirates into peaceful agriculturists. Beyond Surawuk lies British North Borneo, area 30,000 squaro miles, which is not an official .dependency, but is the property of an English trading company known an the British North Borneo Company, to whom a royal charter was granted in 1881. Last year a protectorate was nominally established over the whole of North Borneo, by which it was brought under British influence There is a Governor, assisted by a Council and by Residents, who preside over tho various provinces, tho machinery being similar to that in Crown colonies.
