WKtaTORT, This day. • Tho Union Compaiiy'e steamer Suva, when going out just -ooforo't* o'clock thisr nwruing, by -fiojnp msuiß (rot into thebreak water crossing the bar. Slio was unablo to extricater-herself, took ground, nnd drifted in tho surf to the soutb a distauco of ovor a rnilo from tho river. . Sho then stuok hard and fast. Sho , bumped continuously after leaving tho channel. Tho seas broko over her, and when she grounded she rolled about and received Ilia full benefit of tho heas. Tho steamer lies on 1 soft be-'ich, and has apparently received no damage. At low tide she will be high and dry. Sho may be launched seaward in fine weather, or taken across tho neck of land to tho lagoon. There was only a moderate sea on when the Suva went out. Immediately tho vessel mot the sea across tho bar she seemed to lose power. This was her iiiafc trip here. Captain Todd is in charge. There were two passengers—Messrs Turner uiid Rigg. It is expected, communication with tho stranded boat will bo held tnis afternoon. Later.
Tho Suva lies nearly end on to the beach, with the seas washing- over her. Tho cause of tho accident was either tho breakage of machinery or of the fact of tho steamer having- insuificinnt power to get through the break, probably the latter. She was drawing thirteen feet six inches. She was loaded with coal. Thoro was plenty of wutor on the bar, and tho disaster was in no way due to the port.
