Tho football match between tho Englishmen and Taranaki came off to-day. Tho weather was fine, aud thero was a largo attendance. Tho play during tho first half was fast. Both teams wero evenly matched, aud no score was mado, but Taranaki wero forced down. _ Tho Englishmen were conspicuous for their excellent passing, and the local men for suro collaring. Early iv tho second half Taranaki secured a try, but failed to convert it into a goal. One of tho Englishmeu got his slioulder hurt by a heavy fall. Tho Englishmen made a desperate rush towards tho close of the game, and claimod a try in the last fivo minutes of the spell, but it was dispnted, and the referee gave his decision against tho Englishmen, tho game finishing without auy further scorii g, Taranaki being victorious by a try to nil.
