WAIPAWA.
[own correspondent.]
This day.
The Fire Brigado committee's bazaar is to be postponed for a week or so, instead of holding it as intended to-morrow. : The Waipawa District Hospital committee held a meeting at Patangata Council offices yesterday ' afternoon, -when there were present:—Messrs Mackersey, Hunter, Warren, Crosse, and McHardy, all members of tho Patangata County Council.—Mr Mackersey took tho chair.—The secrotary was instructed to mako some arrangements for the removal of the trees along the foiice.' —A letter from Col. Herrick, chairman of the committee, was read, stating that he was unable to be present at the meeting, but urging the committee not to pass the resolution given notice of by Mr Mackersey, as it would inflict a great hardship upon the Waipawa members. —Mr Mackersey said he regretted that Col. Herrick was not present, and he was sorry also that Mr Smith, the chairman of the Waipawa County Council, had not put in an appearance, so that he might be enabled to reply to what was to be brought forward.■: He then proceeded to review at length some alleged irregularities which had. itaken place when the Patangata members were not present. For instance, at a meeting of tho Waipawa County Council a resolution was passed authorising the purchase of furniture and other requisites for the Hospital, which resolution was confirmed at a meeting of the Hospital Committee. He and Mr McHardy attended that meeting, and objected to the motion passing as it was illegal; but they were outvoted, and he then gave notice to rescind tho resolution. At ,the next meeting Colonel Herrick was not present, and Mr Smith was in tho chair. -His resolution was ruled out of order, but, being'allowed to speak, he told those present that they were acting illegally.. Tho chairman re - plied that'he. was aware of that, but as there was no penalty in tho Art, it did net matter. He (Mr M.) asked him if that, was the position ho wished to place the gommittoo ' in, but. the chairman . did not reply. One of the accounts run up was. for' £30, and .the articles around were bracketed by the chairman to be ordered from this or that business man; Altogether tho proceedings had been so irregular that it was necessary to put a Stop ifco this sort of thing, and he thoref ore
pressed his' motion.—Mr G. Hunter proposed an amendment that it was not aefvis'able at that meeting to press the resolution. —Mr Crosse seconded the amendment' pro forma, but tho members concurring, in the Chairman's view the motion providing that in future the meeting' should be held at the hospital was carried.—Mr Hunter said he quite agreed with the Chairman's remarks, but thought their action might be misconstrued. —This concluded the business.
