ENTERTAINMENT AT THE SPIT.

The promoters of the entertainment given at Port Ahuriri last evening have every reason to be satisfied with the manner in which their efforts to bring tho concert to a successful issue were rewarded. Thcro was a large attendance at tho Naval Artillery's drill-hall last night to witness the performance -.in;,aid of the Boojum and Sir Donald Relief Fund. The 'busses which ran from the town, were well patronised, and many more would have gone to the Spit had it not been . that the vehicles stopped running at about twenty minutes to eight, thus disappointing many who had intended to go. Mr J. G--Kinross occupied the chair, aud in a neat little speech briefly addressed tho audience. They all knew the object of the entertainment, and he was very much pleased to see so largo an audience assembled. . Tho Garrison Band also took part in the concert, and- by their selections rendered outside attracted many spectators to the hall, while "Merry Moments" and "Little Sailors" pleased all their admirers. Of the concert, it was too lengthy, twenty items figuring on the programme, and encores being demandedin nearly every case, it was very late when the performance concluded. Some capital pieces, however, were submitted during the evening. Miss Large in "The Fisherman's Daughter" and "Mr Hodgson in a recitation " The Life-boat" may claim the palm. Miss Largo. had to respond to a vociferous encore, while Mr Hodgson fairly brought down the house. Mr Hodgson, by the manner in which his recitation was given, gave the audience a vivid picture of the scene, and, with tho roar of the sea, bad quite .an effect upon tho audience. Miss Buchanan was iv good voice, and her rendition of'".The Lady of the Lea." and " The Chorister " were as usual given in that young lady's best style. Mrs Duncan was. warmly applauded for her. song "Lonely Harp," -while the instrumental trio, by Misses Kraeft (violin), Jago (piano), and Mr • Spackman (violin) was greatly appreciated. Mr H. Martin was well suited in his song.- Mr H. Robjolms sang a comic song, in character, and was fairly • successful. Mr J. Holt in " Ship Ahoy" aud Mr Simpson "Alone on the ■ Raft wore both well received. " The Women of Mumbles Head " was the subject of a recitation by Mr Levi, for •which- the audience showed appreciation. Mr Whittington also gave a recitation, " Bill Jinks." Mr Whittington has given this piece so often that it is about stale, and as ho handles his pieces well he should let the public have something fresh. Mr Forne was at home in a. comic song. We almost forgot to mention Mr Collins, who received an encore for ." That's when you feel it," and, responded with "Under the parlor stairs." ~Mr R. Smith was. loudly applauded for his Scotch dances. Mr Wilkie gave a capital reading. Mr Mullis played the accompaniments in various pieces during the evening, and gave every satisfaction. On the whole the -concert passed off most successfully, the result of which should be the handing over to the fund committee of a good substantial sum. A vote of thanks to the chair, and for the ladies and gentlemen who had given their services for the occasion having been passed, tho audience dispersed. •
