After we went to press yesterday, the | count of the Wanganui Cup race came to j hand. Silence started a great favorite, Tigridia being next in demand. After-ra couple 'of false starts Lady. NoraK;'got away first, fallowed closely by Rumor, with Silence holding a good position fourth. Passing tho grand stand for the I first time Lady Norah. led; Rumor being close on her heels, and Friendship running a good mare on the outside. This position was unaltered until they reached the bottom turn, when Silence could be seen coming rapidly through his horses with a great rush, and loud cries of 'Silence wins!' were raised. Coming up the straight tho excitement was intense, as Lady Norah looked like coming, but she was unable to wrest the palm from Silence, who won with apparent ease, Rumor being a good third. Waitiri was never, prominent during the race. Tigridia pulled up dead lame. Dividend inside £1 16s, outside .£ll9s. Cinderella won the double of Flying and Welter Handicaps, the former very easily, and the latter by a head after a great race with Ruapehu..
The Herald describes Magnesia as a horse. The card would have informed our contemporary that Magnesia is a mare. And Silence's time for the "Wanganui Cup of two miles is. tolerably fast, if the Herald's figures, 2min. 38see., be correct.
Seventy horses were last night nominated Eor the next New Zealand Cup.
Silver Prince, Itepo, Disowned, Artillery, and Master Agnes have been scratched for nil engagements at the Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting, and Apropos and Spade Guinea for the Great Autumn Handicap.
For the Handicap Hurdles to be run at Oatnaru autumn meeting 8 nominations were received, for tho Autumn Handicap IS, for the Anniversary Handicap 10, and for the Steward's Handicap 18.
