Woodville, This day.
Healcyandßeidy boarding-housekeepers, and Bradbury, storekeeper, were yesterday convicted of sly-grog selling at the Manawatu Gorge, and fined £50 or one month's imprisonment each. They elected to go to gaol. Two spielers were sentenced to six weeks' hard labor for robbery from the person. Wellington, This dayy. Mr Loughrey, city engineer, has drawn up a report on the water works, confirmatory of the statements already made. He considers the water must be shut off for a fortnight to thoroughly repair the race, and the defective sluice yalve could not be touched till the reservoir was emptied. The repairs and alterations, he suggests, would cost £7000. He points out there is now plenty of water, and that he is not responsible for defective work which was constructed before he came to the colony. Nothing is known here with regard to the rumored appointment of Mr Cecil Eaikcs to succeed Sir William Jervois. Neither the Government nor the Governor's Private Secretary have heard anything, and arc inclined to believe it a mere transitory rumor. Sir William's time is not yet up.
