WELLINGTON NEWS.

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, This day. The Government have determined not to take part in the Adelaide Jubilee Exhibition. They consider the cost too heavy, and not worth while unless they can mako a proper display. Besides, all the Public Works and Mining Departments exhibits aro at London, aud it would cost a great deal to replace them. Mr Scott, and other representatives of tho Midland Railway Company, had a long interview with the Minister for Public Works re the preliminaries necessary to starting the work. Tenders were called to-day in London for the New Zealand loan of £1,325,000, together with £242,800 of inscribed stock, representing an equivalent amount in district railway debentures held by the Government. These two amounts make the total referred to in the cable on the subject. The minimum is fixed at 97. Alfred Waters, convicted yesterday of forgery, was sentenced this morning to 18, months' hard labor, $üb|e_t to'the decision of the Court of Appeal on the question whether the cheque, not being, filled in. could be held a forgery. " ""'.:' The Colonial Treasurer states -that the Customs receipts for the first six months of

tho financial year are £57,000 below tho estimates, and he does not anticipate much, if any, larger deficit during the remaining six months. He thinks that if there had been the usual rush to clear goods before the financial statemnnt, the deficiency would hove been much less, and attributes the reduced Customs duties to less expenditure on spirits and the lower entry value of goods subject to ad valorem duties. The half yearly Treasury returns will show a less amount, but that only includes twentyfive weeks, the second half being twentyseven weeks. They aro not yet ready for publication. The stamp revenue for tho year is expected to come up to the estimate, largo special payments having yet to come come in. The pastoral revenues come in well. Bailways show less goods traffic during the first half than was expected. The passenger traffic keeps up well.
