A pkivate h'rm at Christchurch has furnished Mr M. K. Miller with the following returns of shipments of frozen .sheep, that appear to ho more complete than anything , we have yet seen published. It will he seen that the shipments were comparativelysmall, and that they extended from May, 1883, to September, 1884 :—

show a net return per sheep of 20s Bd, as against 17s 6d, the local value at time of shipment. In a report they have lately issued Messrs Roberta and Davidson call attention to the following points : —
At present each cargo which comes to England is usually made up of a number of parcels consigned to different consignees, and the necessity for keeping each lot separate, to be accounted for by itself, creates much additional expense, as a great number of hands are employed to overtake the long and troublesome sorting before the carcasses can be stowed away in the freezing stores ; besides which the time occupied in separating the different lots we believe often causes injury to the carcasses, as they become soft, and lose what the butchers call their " bloom."
In the case of sailing ships it also frequently happens that arrangements are made to keep tho meat frozen on board for perhaps a month after tlio vessel's arrival, and when a consignee wishes to get delivery of his parcel, perhaps to avail himself of some special opportunity to sell it advantageously, he cannot obtain it because it docs not suit tho views of another consignee to remove his lot of sheep, which meanwhile blocks the passive of discharging. With a view to effecting a remedy for these drawbacks, we very strongly impress upon the shippers the necessity for making every cargo what is g-cnerally termed in the colonies a " common pot;" in other words, let each parcel of sheep shipped lose its individuality once it is put on board, and the cargo be sold as if belonging to one owner, and each shipper can then receive his share of the gross not proceeds in proportion to the weight of meat contributed by him. We think that tho advantages to be gained by adopting this suggestion must be so manifest to any person acquainted with the business, that any argument commending its adoption need not be entered on.
