WOODVILLE.
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] F Last evening Mr Thomas Bracken performed here, and was greeted by a fairly good audienco for a small place. The programme was tho samo as that delivered in other places and was much appreciated. Mr Bracken goes on to-day to Palmerston North, where he lectures to-morrow evening. The Directors of the Cheese and Bacon Factory Company (limited) held their usual weekly meeting last ovening, when tho arrangements that were going on were placed before them, and seemed to give satisfaction. The manager is now on the spot, and it was expected that the Factory -would commence operations by tho middle of December. There has been a rumour that the Gorge railway may soon be surveyed with a view to letting the contracts in January next !_, is to be hoped that this is tr o '_~ tension to PalmerstOT_^-^f\ vould ' be of great servke^g«-^di str i ct- There is a P°^" : __iy of the line being taken over a «_S__lo in the ranges, I believe, but not very much is known about that routo yet. It is calculated that the cost of taking it through the Gorge cannot be less then £10,000 per mile. Sinco the County election people seem to have settled down to content themselves with the gentleman who was successful. There is no reason why they should not do so, for Mr Hall will do his utmost for the district. There is no doubt about that in tho minds of thoso who know him. The question of his not having much influence, and being the tool of a certain politician, aro certainly not to bo got over, but there he is, and there's an end on't. Some ploughing is being dono hero this year, and in a season or two hence, I should not be surprised to hear that a very large area had been broken up. When the logs and stumps once begin to rot, they soon become so soft as to bo easily torn out or broken. When tho bulk of tho land in tho Seventy Milo Bush is capable of being ploughed and cropped, then, and perhaps not before, we may look with certainty to returns from the soil that is at present bring-! ing in very littlo indeed. Perhaps it is in expectation of thoso happy times that people are buying land in these parts at present prices.
