SCULLING CHALLENGE.
SIR MODRED SCRATCHED FOR HAWKESBURY HANDICAP.

SYDNEY
AVednesday. The seventh quinquennial report of the Australian Mutual Provident Society was issued to-day. It contains a comprehensive resume of the history and progress of the society, and a complete exposition of its present position. The surplus for the five years ended 21st December, 18S3, is stated to be „1,10G,19G, of ivhich .£142,903 are reserved from distribution, leaving for division among the members the sum of £1,013,233, Avhich amount will represent reversionary bonuses amounting to £2,094,312. Examples ivhich arc given in the report show that the bonuses on this occasion Avill be much larger than on the previous division in 1879. (Received August 20, S p.m.) Clifford, tho oarsman, has issued a challenge to all comers to i-oav a sculling match for any sum up to £500 a side. Sir Modred has been scratched for the HaAvkesbury Handicap. Great dissatisfaction is expressed by tho public, ivith whom the horse ivas a strong favorite.
