THE NEW MINISTRY.

[To the Editor of tub Daily Telegraph.] Sir, —I, in common Avith many in this district Avhom 1 have spoken to, are not altogether pleased Avith the position taken up by tho journals that Aye look upon as leaders of opinion in Hawke's Bay. Sir Julius Vogel offered himself as a possible candidate for Gisborne, and every ono Ava# glad, or seemed to be glad, to see our old friend back again from tho Old Country, and all seemed rather inclined either to support him or else hear what he had to say first. Noav he has been elected for a toAvn in tho South Island avo need not turn round so suddenly on him ; just give him a fair trial, or at any rale hear what he has to say before condemning him. If, when he has stated his policy, it should thou appear to be erroneous, by all means criticise it, but this system of finding out little holes in his conduct before avo know anything about I Avhat his policy is certainly I don't consider to be giving him fair play. As to abusing Mr Stout for finishing his more important private business in Dunedin before ho undertakes public affairs, is, I take it, really unjust. Wo givo even a condemned criminal time to arrange his affairs before Aye hang him, and what has Mr Stout done so very bad (before he lias done anything about the public affairs) that Aye should not hear him, givo his reason or apology, before avo deny him. As to exciting a merely selfish North v. South feeling, Avhen there are far nobler themes to occupy our attention, I am really sorry to see anything started that may possibly lead to such narroAV-minded issues.—l api, &c., -y J.H, Waipawa, August IS, 18S4. v
