HAWKE'S BAY JOCKEY CLUB'S SPRING RACE MEETING.

The Spring meeting of tho Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, which took placo yosterday, was not favored by the clerk of the weather. The morning at first looked dull and cloudy, and gradually thickened round until at 12 o'clock it was raining steadily ; but, notwithstanding the threatening appearance of tho day, there was a very fair attendance on tho course. The grand stand was well patronised, but there wero very few carriages on the ground. Owing to the steady downpour of rain the course was very heavy, and the top dressing made it rather sticky. On account of the heavy state of tho ground no official timo was taken of tho races. It speaks Avell for the club that, although the weather was so disheartening, the officials worked with a will, and the Erogramme was got through without a itch of any consequence. It is impossible to givo a good account of the races, as the weather was at times so thick that tho colours of tho riders when at tho back of tho course were not distinguishable. The biggest dividends paid out by the totalisators were in the Flying Handicap and the Hurdles. There is very little doubt but that tho heavy state of the ground made a great differenco to some of the horses, especially thoso that were running without shoes. This was noticed in Briar and Jacob, who, when they got at the back of Ulie courso in the soft ground, seemed unable to make any headway. The first race run was tho hawke's bay guineas, Of 105 soys., with a sweep of 6 soys. each for acceptors added ; for three-year-olds ; colts Sst lOlbs, fillies and geldings Bst slb; distance, 1 mile. They kept this order till reaching the end of the Btraight at the back of tho course, when Jacob and Briar dropped back, and Oberon went up into second place. After the first hurdle Doubtful led, which position he maintained throughout. He was well and pluokily ridden by McCoy. At tho first hurdle both Juliet and Wild Dayrell fell, and at the back of the course Reform and Fear Not also came to grief. Pastime, who was well ridden by Edwards, came up close at tho last half mile, and finished a good second. HACK HURDLE RACE, Of 30 soys ; list up ; distance, 1| miles. Gundagai (Warren) J Hurricane (Mahcr) ■ - —Sussex and Come Again also ran. Snider and Oberon wero scratched. Heretaunga and Fear Not were the first away, and led past the grand stand, with Kuni and Radames in close attendance. They maintained this position to the back of the course, where Escopeta began to improve her position, and at tho | middle of the straight was on even terms with Heretaunga, and the two ran well together until within a quarter of a mile from home, when the mare came away and won by a length, hard held. FLYING HANDICAP, Of 100 soys., second horse to receive 20 soys. from the stakes; distance J mile. Captain Russell's eh f Leonora, 4 years, Bst 101b (Robertson) 1 W. Munn's br g Scud, aged, Cat BJb (Woods) 0 —Robina, Radames, Rangipo, Oberon, and Majory were scratched. A good deal of trouble was given to the starter through one of tho horses continually breaking away. When the flag fell Kingask got away with a good start, and make play for tho half-mile, when Leonora, Yankee, and Mischief went to the front, and a good race between tho three took place down the straight. When a short distance from home Leonora drew ahead and won easily by three lengths, Yankee beating Mischief by a head for second place. Captain Russell is to be congratulated on his success at this meeting, having with his two marcs won three races, and being only beaten by a head for the only other race in which they started.

HACK race, Of 20 soys., lOst up, distance 1 mile. This was again a gift to Gundagai, with Warren up, the horse winning by three lengths, pulling his jockey out of his saddle. Lady Jane was second. Daybreak, Black - tiiorne, Bodkin, Speculation, Ginger, and Sussex also ran.

This ended the day's racing. There was a steady downpour of rain during the whole time tho races were run, and overybody seemed glad to get away. Tho book makers must have had a very good time of it at this meeting, as there was very little straight out betting, most of the betting being laid in doubles; and Doubtful winning the Hurdles and Leonora the Flying Handicap upset the calculations of the knowing ones. The state of the totalisators was as under: —
