WAIROA.

rJTHOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.! October 4th, 1883

A very poorly attended meeting of the X Wairoa County Jockey Club took place at tho Clyde Hotel last night for the purpose of deciding whether to hold a race meeting during tho coming summer or not. Mr T. Carroll was elected secretary, and after some discussion it was decided to hold a meeting on January 31st, 1884. Tho following officers wero elected:—President, Mr A. H. Duff; Judge, Mr J. Gemmell; Starter, Mr J. Powdrell; Handicnpper, Mr J. O. Evctt; Clerk of the Scales, Mr H. T. Williams; Clerk of the Course, Mr W. H. Pcakman ; Stewards, Messrs Thorpe, Gemmell, Duff Bros., Carroll, Gethin, T. Powdrell, Large, Porter, Peakman, Williams, G. Bee, J. H. Brown, and Moloney; Treasurer, Bank of New Zealand. The programme has not been much altered from that of last year. Tho club has a balance of £00 odd in hand.

Tho Council met on Wednesday, and most religiously sat upon tho proposal to build a bridge over the Wairoa river at North Clyde. Tho Chairman,_ who is generally considered a leading spirit in tho party of progress, actually suggested tho possibility of the bridge being carried away as a reason for its not being erected ! Tho only Mohaka member present was of course opposed to tho work. Crs Conper and Dulf manifested a sudden regard for tho interests of the Mohaka people, and objected to so much money boing spent on one bridge at Clyde, while so many bridges at Mohaka wanted " fixing up." Thoy didn't want anything spent in Waikaremoana riding. Oh, no !
