Major Cantley, of the Royal Engineers, an officer of high standing in ttho Engineers, hii-s been specially selected to come to Now Zealand in connection with the scheme of harbor defence on account of his particular capabilities for the duty entrusted to him. Ho has been twenty-four years in active service, and was employed under his Excellency Sir "William Jcrvois on the defences of Cork Harbor, subsequently at Gibraltar, and later still in reporting on the Falkland Islands and their capabilities as a naval coaling station, etc. He has been.
sent out at the request of Sir William Jervois, to assist his Excellency in respect of the executive work connected with designing a thorough system of defence. Major Cantley will act under his Excellency.
