FIRES.
CHiiisTCirui.cn, This day. Shortly before 4 o'clock this morning a fire broke out in tho grocery premises of Mr D. Strachan, Victoria-street. The building AA'as a Avoodcn one, and Avas well stocked, and the Avholc was speedily destroyed. Adjacent to Straehan's premises, on the northern side, avo re two unoccupied shops, aud one of these was almost burned doAvn, and the other suffered so much as to render it nearly valueless. Strachan states that he went to bed last night about 0 o'clock, leaving a fire burning in his office, and from the appearance of the firo Avhen first discovered there is little doubt that it originated in the office. Straehan's stock and furniture Avere insured for ..1150, distributed in the folloAving offices: —£500 in the Standard, £500 iv the Mercantile Union, and £150 in the Colonial. He estimates his loss at about £300 beyond that sum. The buildings destroyed Avere the property of Mr Dcarsley, and Avere insured in the Standard office for £450. Tdiabu, This clay. A house occupied by Mrs G. Thompson, at Temuka, Avas totally destroyed by fire yesterday. It AA'as insured for £100 in the Ncav Zealand office. Oaxaru, This day. An. uninsured stack of oats belonging to Mr S. Adams, of Hampden, has been destroyed by fire.
