The Home News of November 17 says:— The recent departure from the Clyde of the screw steamer Hauroto, a new vessel of 1980 tons, for the Union Steamship Company of New Zealand, and one of five built and building of a similar class, shows the development of this enterprising company. The vessel named is the third of a class of screw steamers intended for mail and passenger service between New Zealand and Australia, running in connection with the Peninsular and Oriental steamships from the mother country to Melbourne. In this service the screw steamers RotomahanaandTe Anau, built in 1879—the former of which has earned fame as a quickspeed ocean steamer, and as being amongst the first of the ocean-going vessels built entirely of steel —have been approvingthemselves worthily, and tho three vessels recently completed, together with two of the same class still to] be finished, are sure to augment the efficiency as well as sustain the prestige of the company's service. A sixth but smaller steamer of high speed has recently been contracted for. Other five smaller vessels have lately been added to the company's fleet, which altogether, with the vessels under way, amount to close upon 22,000 tons gross measurement. Four of these smaller vessels were finished during the present year, and two near the end of last year, and are intended to take up connecting stations with the larger steamers. The total amount of tonnage built and building this year for the company exceeds 11,000 tons, spread over ten vessels ; a noteworthy fact in connection with the work being'that all the vessels without exception arc of mild steel.
