NORSEWOOD.

(FROM OUR OWN COrtBESPONDENT.) December 28, 1882. The festivities of tbe season were ushered in by a concert at the Makatoka Bchool-room on Tuesday evening last for the benefit of the school children's prize and treat fund. There was a good attendance, and everyone did their best to make the meeting a success. Readings, songs, glees, and musical selections made up an attractive programme, which w..s creditably gone through. On Boxing Day the usual sports and races were held on tbe Te Whiti clearing, Norsewood. There wa3 a very large gathering, and several of the events were well contested. The horse r_eing pri?es vt'ete yery eagerly fought for.

The rain in the afternoon Bomewhat damped the fun, and the caterer at the booth had not provided sufficient for the wants of the public. I hope this part of the programme will receive more attention next year. On Wednesday, the 27th, sports were held in Mr D. Smith's ground at Makatoka, but the wet weather marred the pleasure of the day. On Saturday evening the Methodists held a bazaar, which was well patronised, whilst the Lutheran bazaar on Wednesday evening was a great success, realising over £60. On New Year's Day the school children of the district are to have, a grand picnic at Ormondville. An inquest had been held on the body of the poor man Wilson recently killed, and the jury brought in a verdict of "accidental death,,' adding a rider in reference to the necessity of Better handrails being put on the bridge where the accident occurred. The additions to the Ormondville station are nearly completed, and when opened will prove a great boon to the public of Norsewood. I would suggest that facilities should be given to Norsewood settlers to obtain any goods or parcels that arrive by the night train by having someone at the station for say ten to thirty minutes after the departure of the train to deliver goods to those in waiting. Several Napier scientists have visited our " caves " during the last few days They are well worth a visit.
