November 22. The Lyttelton regatta committee haH rescinded the rule compelling boats entered for (he champion four-oared race to carry a coxswain. At the Council Chamber at noon to-day the Mayor, Mr J. G. Ruddenklan, was presented with a magnificent testimonial
of silver plate in recognition of the manner in which he had fulfilled the dutiesof his office du-ing the international exhibition season this year. He was also presented with a gold locket for the Mayoress (Mrs Kuddenklan). Both testimonals were the result of public subscription.
The New Zealand Shipping Company announce that they have made arrangements for a monthly steam communication with Home. They have contracted for building a line of steamers of 4000 tons gross register each, fitted with refrigerators. Pending the completion of their own steamers they are chartering suitable vessels to begin the running at once. The first steamer will leave London for Lyttelton direct on January 20. She is the British King, of 3559 tons register, built by Harland and Wolff, the builders of the White Star liners and of the P. and O.s Co.'s most recent addition, the Shannon.
A case which came before the R.M. Court yesterday revealed the fact that the boundaries of the new Avon and Riccarton Road Board districts have been so muddled in the proclamation that they were useless.
Dr Watkios, a very old aud wellknown colonist, especially to visitors and residents on the Peninsula, died at Akaroa yesterday at tbe age of 91. The deceased gentleman, who hal been in feeble health for some time pas'-, was tbe oldest member of the College of Surgeons, and likewise the oldest medical practitioner in the colony. He was one of the original Canterbury " Pilgrims," having arrived here in the barque Cressv, the last comer of the famous four ships.
