WELLINGTON.

October 10. The returns of the revenue for the colony for the six months ending Septem-

30th are not yet completed, but probably will be so by the middle of the week. Messrs Dick, Bryce, and Rolleston returned to Wellington yesterday. With reference to the vacant portfolio it has transpired that Mr Wright was offered a seat in the Cabinet with the portfolio of Postmaster-General, but, although he was quite willing to join the Government, be would not accept any other portfolio tban that of Minister of Public Works, as being the one in which his services, owing to his previous training, would be most effective. Mr Wright would have taken the portfolio of Minister of Public Works bad it been vacant, but no other. Mr Wright left for Christchurch yesterday. The breach of promise case Sweeney v. Leybourne occupied the Supreme Court all yesterday. The declaration set forth that in or about the month of December, 1881, the parties agreed to inarrj one another ; that about May following the defendant absolntely refused ever to marry the plaintiff; tbat until such refusal the plaintif} was always ready and willing to marry the defendant, wherefore the plaintiff claimed £300 damages. The defendant pleaded a general denial, and for a second plea said that after the alleged agreement, and before the breach thereof, it was agreed between the parties that the agreement should be rescinded. The examination of the plaintiff took all the afternoon. It is understood tbat no action will be taken by the Government respecting the release or pardon of Lougburst until sentence has been passed on Adams, who was convicted of perjury.
